ABOUT VIVA ABEJAS
“Viva Abejas” means “long live bees” in Spanish.
You might be wondering - why did Chef Richard Sandoval choose bees?
OUR FOOD SYSTEM
Our food system heavily depends on bees. One in every three bites of food depends on bees for pollination. As a restaurant group focused on Latin cuisine, bees are important as they are major pollinators of the agave plant and avocados.
BEES ARE DYING
Nearly one-third of all honeybees in the United States have died in the last few years. Improper pesticide use, loss of habitat, parasites and diseases, and climate change all contribute to the decline of these critical pollinators. It's our goal to spread awareness on the importance of bees to our food system through Viva Abejas.

MEET OUR ARTIST PARTNER:

LOURDES VILLAGÓMEZ
We’ve partnered with Mexico City-based illustrator and artist, Lourdes Villagómez to create bespoke pieces that illuminate the bee and its beauty while also containing embedded symbolism for earth, mother, and honey, all central elements to the visual language for our Viva Abejas campaign. Lourdes lives in Mexico City, where her work contributes to the growth and diversity of the contemporary art initiatives which identify Mexico nowadays.

“In this creative process I was very excited to work in collaboration with Chef Richard Sandoval who is a Mexican-born Chef, introducing Latin cuisine to the world. In my own work, I’ve been trying to share Mexican culture through my paintings, so working with someone who is doing the same for the culinary world is both amazing and wonderful."
